CGYPP 2025 – Empowering Democracy: Czech and German Answers
The global election year of 2024 has shed light on the vulnerabilities of our democratic societies, with the Czech Republic and Germany being no exception. The ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine has not only impacted European security but has also brought to the forefront the importance of standing firm against authoritarian regimes. Concessions made to such regimes threaten the values Europe has upheld for decades.
Both the Czech Republic and Germany, with their historical backgrounds, are facing the rising challenges of authoritarianism, populism, and the spread of disinformation. These forces pose a significant threat to the very fabric of our democratic principles, aiming to divide us and erode the trust that binds our societies together. As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a conflict that left an indelible mark on European history, it is crucial to reflect on the lessons learned and the importance of tolerance for future generations.
Visiting World War II memorials and workshops addressing current forms of nationalism and populism serve as encouragement to actively oppose all forms of extremism in the present and future. On the one hand, this sharpens the understanding of these dynamics and, on the other hand, it provides opportunities to take action against racism and anti-Semitism and to learn what strategies and modern tools can be employed to effectively strengthen democratic principles, foster unity, and bridge the gaps of polarization within society.
These and other topical questions will be addressed at the 16th year of the CGYPP.
